Macomia and Nangade districts have been, in recent weeks, the main strongholds of the terrorist resistance, with the insurgents carrying out several terrorist attacks. While Chai is one of the most guarded by Mozambican and foreign troops, it remains on the route of the insurgents, and a majority of the public has either fled or is hiding in their fields. Additionally, Macomia was one of the province’s main commercial and transport hubs where the militants constantly attack the area to replenish their supplies oftentimes.
