At least 7 ISCAP terrorists were killed and 3 AK47s and a machine gun were recovered in clashes between Congolese troops and the militants near Mwenda, in the Ruwenzori sector of Beni territory. The insurgents attacked Mabobo and Bahatcha villages where they attempted to occupy and kidnap the residents.
Intelligence indicates that the fighting lasted several hours, and an old military camp was burned to the ground. The attack also left two soldiers dead and several civilians rescued from the militant who fled.
The Rwenzori sector has been the theatre for numerous attacks by the militants in North Kivu and while the militants have been pushed out of a huge number of areas, they still conduct the sporadic attacks with the hopes of returning to previously occupied areas. Recently, an emerging trend is that the ISCAP has been doubling back and attacking areas that have been liberated by the UPDF-FARDC alliance and civilians are returning home. This trend is worrying as it begs the question of the permanence of the gains made by the troops in fighting and defeating the insurgency.
