At least three Mozambican soldiers were killed, their barracks razed to the ground, and weapons seized by the militants in Quiterajo, in the district of Macomia. The Islamic State (ISIS-Central) claimed the attack citing that it was conducted by the ‘Wilayah Mozambiq’ making it the first time the ISCAP branch in Mozambique has been referred to as such since it swore its allegiance to ISIS.
The claim was accompanied by images of weapons and ammunition that have been captured in their recent attacks. Quiterajo and the larger Macomia are considered a bastion of the insurgency and despite the presence of SAMIM troops, the insurgency has proven tough and held the majority of its locations in the region.
Intelligence indicates that despite the allied forces in the region, the Islamic State branch in Mozambique continues to enjoy unwavering support from the new leadership of ISIS and the recognition of the group as Mozambique’s province will serve as a motivation for the group to garner international headlines and attention in trade for the support and mentorship.
