Latest military reports from Somalia confirms that a senior member of Al-Shabaab mid-week surrendered in the general area of Garbaharey, a town located in southern Somalia.
The operative identified as Abdirazak Abdullahi Mohamed was a senior Al-Shabaab fighter handed himself to the security operators in the area and informed them that he will help in unearthing Al-Shabaab networks in the area.
Reports further noted that Mohamed was in charge of assassinations in Garbaharey and has been fighting along the Al-Qaeda aligned Al-Shabaab for six years.
The operative also note that he has taken part in several operations in Gedo and Bay regions of Somalia against military targets.
The latest incident follows other similar incidents whereby foreign fighters especially from East Africa have decamped from Al-Shabaab in numbers. Al-Shabaab in the past has executed fighters especially from Kenya on suspicion of spying against the terrorist group. The suspicions on the other hand have prompted dozens of terror operatives to leave the group to avoid them facing similar execution fate.
In a separate military operation, at least 15 Al-Shabaab operatives were killed on Thursday in a special operation conducted at Afcad area near Bulaburte town in Hiiraan region of central Somalia.
The latest incident comes amid sustained operations by joint forces against Al-Shabaab in central and southern parts of Somalia where the militants still control huge swathes of rural areas where they conduct ambushes and plant landmines.
