At least thirteen (13) Islamist Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and several others critically wounded in a joint military operation that also saw their base destroyed in Lower Juba, southern Somalia.
Following on tip-off from the members of the public, joint military troops launched an operation on Sunday, destroying the militant’s makeshift base in Banka Jira village of Lower Juba.
Among those killed included three senior leaders who were involved in regrouping of the fighters in the village. Also, assortment of weapons from the militants were recovered.
There has been an upsurge in militant’s activity in Lower Juba region of Somalia whereby the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab have continued to target security contingents, military bases and convoys.
