The president of Somalia’s northern breakaway region of Somaliland received a red carpet welcome at Ambouli International Airport as he embarked on a state visit to Djibouti.
Somaliland leader Muse Bihi and his entourage held talks with Djibouti President Ismail Omar at the presidential palace on Tuesday where they discussed the relations between the two sides.
The meeting between the two sides discussed a number of issues of mutual concern, such as cooperation between the Djibouti and Somaliland, in terms of economic, media and trade relations as posted on Guelleh Twitter account.
The independent Somaliland is on the onslaught to market itself across the African and recently; Bihi visited the West African nation of Guinea upon invitation by President Alpha Conde, an invitation that infuriated Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
The semi-autonomous Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and has maintained a measure of peace and stability but Somalia insists that Somaliland is not independent.
Unlike the Federal government of Somalia that is locked in a legal tussle with neighboring country and ally, Kenya; over undisputed territorial waters in the Indian Ocean; Somaliland is rapidly enjoying a warm and growing tie in East Africa, most notably with Kenya.
In July, the Government of the Republic of Somaliland through its Foreign Ministry issued a statement warning the weak FGS based in Mogadishu of undiplomatic actions with its neighbor saying Kenya and other international partners have sacrificed significantly to help the people of Somalia take strides in rebuilding their country.
