Military officers from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zimbabwe underwent an intensive five-day induction course for recently deployed officers. The officers are expected to be based at the AMISOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu.
They will be attached to logistics, training, communication, intelligence, operations and plans units. The training is geared at helping the officers and the force achieve its mandate in Somalia which is primarily is to defeat al Shabaab as well as help the government transition especially in terms of security.
AMISOM is preparing to gradually exit Somalia and subsequently hand over the security apparatus to Somalia and as such the training is necessary to ensure that despite the country not having a strong military, what is available is equipped with the necessary skills to maintain security.
