Police in Baardere town located in Gedo region of Somalia have shot and killed a female suicide bomber attempting to blow herself up at the district police station. The woman is said to have been dropped off by a vehicle believed to be coming from Baidoa town.
The woman who was targeting the police station attempted to hurl a grenade at the security gate officers to gain access to the station but was swiftly shot dead before detonating her suicide vest.
Last month, a female suicide bomber blew herself up inside the mayor’s office during a security meeting killing district commissioners, directors and injured the Mogadishu Mayor who later passed away for the serious injuries from the attack.
Female suicide bombers by the al Shabaab are becoming a common occurrence, especially in the past few months. The women have been discovered to gain access to relative secure areas without detection and as such are able to conduct more successful and targeted attacks. Al Shabaab is seemingly morphing to the use of female suicide bombers as a staple mode of attacks against government and security apparatus in Somalia.
