Two al Shabaab terrorists were on Monday morning executed following a ruling by a military court in Mogadishu. The two, identified as Anshour Omar Abukar 23, Mohamed Ali Borow, 25 were convicted for their roles in multiple attacks that took place between 2017 and December 2018.
According to documents from the military tribunal that sentenced the two, they were responsible in different capacities for multiple attacks. Notably, they ere involved in attacks on the Nasa-Hablod and Sahafi Hotels and National Theatre that killed at least 26 people including journalist Awil Dahir Salad and General Secretary of Somali women Anab A Hashi.
Ashur and Borow were arrested by the security agencies near the crime scene after getting off from a vehicle which late exploded and resulted in damages to nearby buildings.
The Somali military court has in the past handed death sentences to members of Al Shabaab for the various violent crimes by the al Qaeda affiliate. Previously, the executions typically conducted by the firing squad are meant to instill fear among members of the terror organization and dissuade any potential recruitment into the al Shabaab. Additionally, such executions are used by the government as a way to send a stern message to the terrorists as well as entice defections of the disgruntled members of the terror outfit.
