The Al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen terrorist group conducted an ambush targeting the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) AMISOM Contingent on morning patrol duty in Burgavo, (Buur Gaabo) a port town in Lower Juba region of southern Somalia and near the border with Kenya. 9 Terrorists were killed by the Kenya Military troops after a dangerous close quarters combat.
One Kenyan soldier sustained life threatening injuries as he engaged the terrorists using a Dushka machine gun. He was airlifted by the army air support to Lamu for medical attention. The terrorist mounted the attack by pitching a technical vehicle up on a hill and fired a volley of Dushka Machine gun fire at the patrol party logistics resources.
The KDF team swiftly conducted a counter attack. An Army Machine gunner atop a Bastion Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) opened fire at the terrorists’ technical vehicle forcing it out of its strategic position, allowing soldiers to deploy and weaken a group of militants who were laying ambush. The injured soldiers’ machine gun was lost to the terrorists.
