The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in West Africa has announced that it killed 42 Islamic State militants (ISWAP) in the Lake Chad region following a fierce battle. The operations occurred in a Lake Chad island called Doron Naira.
MNTJF issued a statement that said that is one of the greatest losses inflicted on the ISIS militants. Further, the statement said that the operations were aimed at clearing and disrupting the terrorists’ supplies and line of communications that have facilitated the group’s recent attacks.
ISWAP was formed in 2016 when a faction Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS. The insurgency has affected countries that border Lake Chad – Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, as well as islands on the lake itself. The insurgency, which began in northeast Nigeria, has killed more than 30,000 people and displaced about two million since 2009.
