The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the alliance has no goal to have a permanent presence in Afghanistan. Instead, NATO remains in Afghanistan fight terrorism and to train Afghan forces, emphasizing that the goal of the alliance and not have a permanent presence in the Middle Eastern nation.
The announcement comes as ISIS-K has been attempting to establish itself in Afghanistan as the central Headquarters in Iraq and Syria fall following a counterterrorism campaign led by the United States. Other international terrorist group have been seeking haven in the country and as such the need for the NATO mission in the country.
NATO has been leading a non-combat mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions. The Resolute Support Mission (RSM) was launched in January 2015, following the completion of the mission of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in December 2014, when responsibility for security in Afghanistan was transferred to the Afghan national defense and security forces.
