The United State Africa Command (AFRICOM) has announced three separate aerial bombardments in Somalia against al Shabaab. In a statement, the US conducted airstrikes against al Shabaab positions in Kobon located near the southern port city of Kismayo, in the vicinity of Gandarshe, and in the vicinity of Bariire Lower Shabelle Region.
Eight al Shabaab militants were killed in the Kobon strike as the US seems to vigorously step up their offensive strikes. Additionally, an estimated total of 18 al Shabaab were killed in the Lower Shabelle strikes bringing the total of killed terrorists in the strikes to 26. In 2019, there have been over a dozen strikes against the al Shabaab.
The US further said that Kobon has been used to stage attacks against Somali forces as well as other allied forces in the region. These precision airstrikes were executed to degrade al-Shabaab capabilities, reduce the threat against Somali partners, and prevent al-Shabaab from plotting terror attacks throughout the region.
