The U.N. Security Council voted collectively to lift sanctions against Eritrea but extended the arms embargo on Somalia and ban on Somali charcoal trade.
The sanctions lift on Eritrea following its improved relations with Ethiopia and other neighboring countries.
Ethiopia’s UN ambassador and other council members spoke to the media after the Wednesday vote, welcoming the lift positively.
UN Security Council imposed an arms embargo and other tough sanctions on Eritrea in 2009 following reports that it was supplying weapons to the Somali-based Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab. Eritrea also faced the sanctions for refusing to resolve a border dispute with neighboring Djibouti, a key U.S. ally in the Horn of Africa.
The border dispute is yet to be resolved and the resolution adopted by the council says it will continue monitoring developments.
