A suspected suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive device detonated in the general area of Somalia’s Jaalle Siyad Military Base in the Capital Mogadishu targeting an armored vehicle belonging to the Italian Army European Union Military Mission in Somalia EUTMS, contingent.
The Italian EUTMS contingent vehicle was targeted by the SVBIED as it was moving within the general area of the Somali Army Headquarters. The Italians are serving as advisors and trainers in Somalia.
Initial assessment confirms a number of both military and civilian casualties. No group has claimed responsibility so far. This is a rare event in Mogadishu. The presence of Italian Army operatives in Mogadishu is little known and targeting them must have been planned from within.
