Boeing company was on Monday 13th August 2018 awarded a contract to upgrade the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels to Super Hornets.
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will receive new, retrofitted F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter aircraft in the next few years.
The Navy awarded Boeing Co., the F/A-18’s manufacturer, a contract worth $17 million firm-fixed price contract to configure nine F/A-18E and two F/A-18F aircraft to the standard Blue Angels’ aircraft structure.
The regiment, which typically maintains 11 aircraft, presently flies the F/A-18C/D models.
Boeing will begin upgrade by painting the nine Super Hornets blue and gold, adding smoke generating equipment, changing the cockpit configuration and doing other things necessary for the jets to be used by the elite fighter jet demonstration team under a second contract, which should be awarded soon
Boeing will configure the aircraft at its St. Louis facility and expected to be complete the new jets in December 2021, according to the contract.
