Somali government forces backed by the Ethiopian contingent of AMISOM have captured the strategic areas in the town of Baidoa from the Al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebels. The overrun of the terrorist hideouts was in retaliatory action for al Shabaab attacks in the area.
The security operation occurred after al Shabaab fighters killed five civilians in the region prompting action from the government side. Several al Shabaab militants were killed in the attack and several others escaped the area abandoning their hideouts.
Somali troops have been on high alert especially as the Holy month of Ramadhan approaches. Furthermore, al Shabaab has been scrambling and hiding for intensified security operation from all partners active in Somalia.
