The International Committee of the Red Cross has said that it could withdraw its staff from Somalia following the abduction of a female nurse working in Mogadishu.
The German nurse, identified as Sonia Nielsen working with the Red Cross abducted in Mogadishu was kidnapped by people yet to be identified who took her and escaped in a different car.
The abduction happened around 8 pm local time on Wednesday night when armed men entered the ICRC compound in Mogadishu. The ICRC is in contact with various authorities to try and secure her release.
The Red Cross is among the biggest humanitarian agencies operating and Somalia and as such their withdrawal from Somalia would create a huge gap that could give al Shabaab militants reprieve despite their current weakened state.
