KDF troops fend off a dawn attempted attack by Al-Shabaab terrorists who targeted the Army-Forward Operating Base (FOB) at El-Ram in Mandera South.
The army soldiers who had intelligence tip-off of possible attacks targeting army, police and Safaricom masts in the counties of Mandera and Wajir had sealed off the base.
Intelligence reports provided on 12th February 2017 had warned of small groups of Al-Shabaab fighters being sighted in the named counties.
Wednesday dawn, the terrorists fired rounds of mortar fire targeting the base while another group from a different direction attempted to breach in the base.
Army combat units intercepted the attackers killing 6 Al-Shabaab fighters and injuring many others. Overpowered, they fled towards Gedo region of Somalia abandoning their improvised devices and assortment of weapons which were captured by KDF.
Possible targets to continue to beef up their security by increasing surveillance and day and night covert scouting to ensure they detect enemy movement in time. Army units should also ensure enemy combatants do not cross the border. The army patrol units should be versatile enough to engage and destroy enemy capability and combatants.
