Russia on Tuesday 11th October 2016 said it was opposed to the calls to impose ban for arms on South Sudan by UN Security Council.
There are calls by UNSC to impose ban on the world’s youngest nation in the wake that South Sudan leaders are not committed to bring peace.
Juba government has been reluctant in deployment of regional 4,000peacekeepers in its capital despite approval by the African Union.
In July this year a renewed violence broke out near the presidential palace in Juba after forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to the opposition leader, Riek Machar clashed.
The violence has left hundreds killed while thousands have fled to the neighbouring countries.
The violence piled more pressure on the Juba government, with the UNSC threating to consider a possible arms ban on grounds that South Sudan failed to implement its peace 2015 deal.
Russia’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador, Petr Iliichev was quoted saying that an assessment report from UN Secretary General of the world body, Ban Ki-moon to the council on Monday said that "South Sudan was not impeding or increasing difficulties, so it’s a very neutral letter."
"Our opposition doesn’t change. Yesterday we were discussing Central African Republic, where an arms embargo is in place but the country is just inundated with weapons," he told reporters Tuesday.
Ban Ki moon, in the past, had called for imposition of arms ban on South Sudan.
