In a move to attract more Al-Shabaab defectors, Somali cabinet has endorsed a new policy to engage the defectors in a rehabilitation programme aimed at turning them into productive citizens.
The move also will attract be defectors and block the recruitment of new members from the Al Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab group.
On Wednesday 10th August 2016, about 30 ex-combatants graduated from the Baidoa Rehabilitation Centre.
The former Al-Shabaab combatants received vocational training and psychological support.
Those who spoke expressed confidence that they are ready to positively join hands with government to develop Somalia.
Ibrahim, a former Al-Shabaab fighter, said he was ready to turn a new chapter in life and thanked the Baidoa Rehabilitation Centre saying those brainwashed in Al-Shabaab camps should take government plea to surrender and join the rehabilitation programme.
On Thursday, Somali Commandos conducted a special operation in Galkayo town of Mudug region and arrested 5 Al-Shabaab combatants including a foreigner commander responsible for explosives making unit.
