Kenya security agencies collaborating closely managed to thwart a planned biological attack using anthrax.
According to Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, the architects of the would be terror attack were medical interns attached at the Wote Hospital in Makueni.
The mastermind of the planned attack was arrested on April 29 and has been identified as Mohammed Abdi Ali.
However, Ali had two of his accomplices who are on the run after learning police were after them. The accomplices who have gone into hiding have been identified as Ahmed Hish and Farah Dagane.
Ahmed Hish and Farah Dagane have been interns in Kitale and police have put a Sh2 million bounty reward on them.
IG Boinnet said that the terror suspects were planning unleash a large scale attack with a magnitude of Westgate Mall. Ali’s network included medical experts with whom they planned to conduct a biological attack in Kenya using anthrax.
Intelligence Service warns of Ali’s terror network within Kenya possibly has spread as far as Coast region, North Rift, Western as well as other countries including Somalia, Libya and Syria.
Police revealed that Mr Ali’s terror network within Kenya spread as far as the Coast region, North Rift, Western as well as other countries that include Somalia, Libya and Syria.
According to IG Boinnet its feared that Ali belongs to East African terror group with networks that has links to ISIL (Jahba East Africa).
ARRESTED ACCOMPLICES
Detectives from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) also arrested Ali’s wife, Ms Nuseiba Mohammed Haji, a student at the Kampala International University.
Ms Nuseiba Mohammed Haj was arrested in Uganda while attempting to evade the authorities.
Also arrested in Uganda is her accomplice, Ms Fatuma Mohammed Hanshi.
Police say Ali’s arrest and those of his accomplices is a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in Kenya.
Police still pursuing other interns’ medical doctors on the run Ahmed Hish and Farah Dagane and public asked to give any information that may lead to their arrests.
