March 16, 2016: Tripoli-Libya, The United Nations Security Council has resolved to extend the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until June 15th in order to help the country establish a functional government.
The UNSC will receive updates from the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon at least every 60 days to assess the progress of the implementation of the resolution and progress in the new central government in Libya.
UNSMIL was established in Libya in 2011 upon the request of Libya authorities to help mitigate an armed conflict that stretched for over 6 months. The conflict was a bloody rebellion following the death of for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The UN presence is gradually establishing a government by joining the two opposing government; the one in Tobruk and the internationally recognized in Tripoli to form one government that will end the bloodbath and redeem the failing country.
A stable government in Libya is very fundamental as it will create resolutions and strategies to fight the Islamic State militants that have created a haven amongst Libya’s ‘lawlessness’.
