OSINT Summary: Burundian opposition has welcomed the selection of former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa as a new mediator for the slugged Burundian conflict talks. The talks have been stalled with both sides of the talks citing differences and excuses.
The 77-year old Mkapa was named at the EAC Heads of State meeting in Arusha after the current head of talk Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni was termed as to have a lot of responsibilities in his country seeing as Uganda has had the general elections barely a fortnight ago.
Benjamin Mkapa has been hailed as a perfect co-mediator seeing as he is well versed with the Arusha Peace accord that ended the deadliest civil war in Burundi. Mkapa is expected to bring the two warring sides to the table to ensure that a workable political framework is discussed to end the violence that has rocked the country since April 2015.
The opposition which is being represented by National Council for the Restoration of the Arusha Accord (CNARED has accused the government of stalling the talks saying that they are ready to have the talks at any time as long as the government side presents themselves and shows willingness to negotiate.
Burundian foreign minister, Alain Nyamitwe recently said his government was not pleased with the choice of CNARED to represent to represent all opposition parties to the talks. Nyamitwe said CNARED has been involved in violence and has no popular following.
