February 2, 2016: Kenyan security officers under the multi-agency task force killed 4 al Shabaab militants, recovered a previously stolen National Police Service Vehicles and an assortment of weapons in Boni Forest.
The police vehicle had been stolen in December 2015 in Lamu County after the security officers trailed the vehicle with the militants on board into the forest according to KDF spokesman Col. David Obonyo.
According to preliminary evaluation, the vehicle was rigged with explosives an indication that the vehicle was slated to be used to attack; prompting the detonation making and destroying the vehicle in the process.
Also recovered were 4 AK47 rifles, three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 3 Pistols, a GPS System and a cache of ammunition.
The security officers have put the villagers on high alert urging them to report any cases of injured people seeking medical attention as in the shootout two of the al Shabaab militants escaped with serious injuries.
The attackers are believed to be in an al Shabaab cell trying to regroup in Lamu County and have been responsible for several attacks in the past fortnight.
