SECURITY BRIEF

28th December 2015, as military operations to flush out Al Shabaab militants along the Kenya-Somalia border intensifies; KDF officers have today killed three terrorists in Mandera.

The intensified military operations come amid a series of attacks in the Kenyan northeastern region linked to the Somali based jihadist group.

In the past three weeks, the militant group has ambushed military convoy at Elwak stretch heading to Mandera where one officer was killed.

In separate occasion the militant also ambushed public service buses and a lorry; two people were killed as Muslim shielded Christians from the attack.

The government is carrying out intensified massive security mop-up aimed at flushing out the growing terror cells in Mandera County and broader northeastern region.

The military operations are aimed at flushing out Somali based insurgents groups who intelligence service warns seemingly are regrouping along the Kenya-Somalia border are believed to be planning a major terror attacks in Kenya.

Al Shabaab’s pro-ISIS is also believed to have a hand in recent terror attacks in Mandera which so far has claimed the lives of at least 8 people including 4 security officers among them an Officer Commanding a police station (OCS).

In renewed efforts to neutralize and bar further infiltration of the Al Qaeda branch in Somalia, Kenya security agents are working closely to preempt any possible attack.

According to Mandera County commissioner Fredrick Shisia who regretted that the Somali militants have renewed their terror attacks in the border county.

The security operation will be conducted by a combined team of the military and police officers deployed to the region to track the attackers to their hide outs at the border region with Somalia.

Too sad for innocent victims. Fighting a guerilla insurgency poses risk to the military as well as civilians. In order for the terrorists not to reap political benefit from such tragedy and gain more recruits, the GoK must investigate such reports and afford all necessary support to the victims and their families.

ISIS was formerly called AlQaeda In Iraq before it changed the name to Islamic State in Iraq, then Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). No difference at all between the factions as far as we are concerned, their internal political differences or rivalries notwithstanding.

What a serial lie! The 2 unarmed civilians killed were residents of Mandera, one was critically injured and was rushed to hospital. Apparently, the frightened soldier mistook them for Al Shabab militants and sprayed their car with bullets in the full glare of the public. Anything that disputes that is a lie; pure-unadulterated lie!!

Sad that civilian life are lost under the guise of fighting Al-shabaab. I condole with our Muslim brethren for the loss of innocent lives. Lets be fair when fighting the enemy lest we worsen the situation. The recent efforts by Muslims to shield us from attacks must be met with equal steps to also protecting their lives too. #Muslimsmattertoo.
