Monday 26th October 2015, Somalia National Army troops were engaged in a fierce combat with Al Shabaab fighters in Gedo region. The fierce battle erupted after SNA troops attacked an Al Shabaab combatant’s base.
According to corresponding reports from local residents, heavily armed contingent of SNA troops raid a massive assault on Al Shabaab operational base in Golweyn village some 35 kilometers from Garbaharey town lasting for hours.
There were no immediate details of casualties from both warring sides, but in the past few weeks, the Al Qaeda affiliated branch in Somalia has suffered a series of blows from Somalia National Army backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Golweyn locality lies strategically between Luuq and Garbaharey towns near the Kenyan border is believed to harbor dozens Al Shabaab fighters. The intensified joint military operations are expected to continued in efforts aimed at weeding remnants of Al Shabaab combatants out of Gedo region.
