Mohamed Awale, District Commissioner of Hobyo on 14th October confirmed the occurrence of a meeting between Denmark Navy commanders under NATO’s Indian Ocean Counter-piracy Mission and ministers of the newly formed Galmudug State.
The main agenda of the meeting held in a NATO ship offshore of the coastal town of Hobyo were mainly; anti-piracy operations, violations of the Somali waters by foreign fishing vessels as well as crucial NATO-initiated development projects.
The project will be geared toward eventual total eradication of piracy along the Somali coast. The NATO campaign is preceded by recent possible re-emergence of piracy and dire violation of the Somali coast. Fishermen in the recent past have reported the illegal presence of trawlers loaded with illegal weapons, and dumping waste.
Somali’s coast prior to the recapture of key strategic coastal towns by the allied troops under AMISOM the front of illegal fishing, piracy by the al Shabaab militants and a very active trafficking route as it was controlled by the al Qaeda affiliated group based in Somalia; Harakat al Shabaab al mujahedeen.
