China has donated USD 1.2 million to support the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) as the mission battles out Islamist militants in the terror plagued nation.
Signing the grant documents at the AU headquarters on 07 September 2015, Commissioner for Peace and Security Amb Smail Chergui appreciated foreign aid that is being offered to restore peace in Somalia.
Summary
The Chinese Government is committed to strengthening her economic and social ties with Africa recognizing that African countries are high value contributors to the global platform. However, terrorist groups have continued to stage attacks, making affected countries slump in need.
China’s Permanent Observer to the African Union, Amb. Kuang Weilin, attending the occasion, also reassured Commissioner Chergui that China will continue to stand with Africa, as the continent strives to rid itself of conflict and achieve sustainable development and prosperity for its people.
In January 2015, China donated USD 1.2 million to the AU Peace Fund. China has also in the recent past donated USD two million to support the AU’s efforts to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
On behalf of the Chairperson of the Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the Commissioner re-stated Africa’s sincere appreciation for China’s strategic partnership for peace, security and stability in Africa.
