South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar has threatened to lead the ouster of President Salva Kiir if he fails to vacate office. Machar has cited the international rule that states that any group of people who assume state power unconstitutionally should not be recognized.
Machar declared Salva Kiir’s government illegitimate as of midnight of July, 8 2015, with the backing of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Differences between Machar and South Sudanese President Salva Kiir erupted into conflict on December 2013, when both parties were claiming to represent SPLM, which had fought for the country’s independence. It culminated into the worst civil war that is ongoing.
Analysis of the Situation and Forecast
With SPLM declaring their support for Riek Machar, President Salva Kiir happens to be left hanging on the loose. SPLM also backs the opposition view in the Salva Kiir’s resignation.
Machar says that Kiir’s term in office has expired and that the people of South Sudan had every right to rise up and overthrow him if he fails to leave office.
If Prsident Salva Kiir ignores the rebel forces’ ultimatum, there is a possibility of a new twist of civil crisis that will be spurred by forceful ousting of Salva Kiir.
