The UN has announced that seven of its military personnel under U.N. mission in Congo, MONUSCO, on a peacekeeping mission in the Eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo were killed following an attack near the city of Beni in North Kivu. The military personnel were killed during joint operations with the Congolese military in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Six of the dead were Malawian, and one Tanzanian.
Also, dozens of combatants were killed during the operations targeting the Kididiwe which is a major stronghold for the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels. The ADF is a rebel force with Ugandan origins that has been active in Congo in recent years. Additionally, recently, the ADF has been linked to having Islamist elements with intelligence reports indicating that the group could be welcoming foreign fighters from Libya and possibly the Middle East.
