Six suspected pirates off of Somalia’s coast were detained inside an Italian Navy Ship following an EU-led anti-piracy sweep. The EU navy force arrested the six after a thwarted attack against foreign ships by the suspects. A statement released said that the 6-suspected pirate crew using a motor-whaler and skiff attacked a 52,000 tonne container-ship and a fishing vessel on 17th and 18th November.
The operation was aided by Spanish naval copters after a distress call from the ship which had been hit by RPGs fired by the pirates. The coordinated rescue along with security officials onboard the target vessels ensured that the pirates were apprehended and are slated to be prosecuted after transfer to relevant authorities.
The EU mission has primarily brought the piracy to an end and secured the Indian Ocean which was a menace that claimed numerous lives and millions of dollars in goods and ransom fees.
