At least six al Shabaab fighters have been reportedly killed by heavy fighting that erupted between the militants and AMISOM troops in the outskirts of Baraawe in Lower Shabelle.
AMISOM troops held the al Shabaab fighters in hours-long gunfire after the troops ambushed a cell of the fighters in the region.
AMISOM troops have been working with Somalia’s troops to dismantle the al Shabaab, affiliated to al Qaeda, who seek to topple the Western-backed government. However, the offensive against the militants has intensified in recent weeks in a move seen to put pressure on the fighters and eventually eliminate the terror organization that has been operational in the Horn of Africa country.
