The Democratic Republic of Congo troops (FARDC) have arrested at least 40 members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) that is part of the Islamic State Central Africa Province (ISCAP).
ADF has been conducting attacks in the restive eastern region of DRC with renewed attacks begin towards the end of 2019. More than 300 people have been killed in ADF attacks in eastern DR Congo since the end of October when the army began its operations against the militia group.
The arrests were made following a joint operation between the UN mission MONUSCO and FARDC in Makeke vicinity. The operation was triggered by the senseless killings of civilians in the Beni region that escalated in October and meant to cement the new standing of ADF as part of ISIS.
The recent arrests are complementary to the available intelligence that has maintained that ADF had been amercing numbers and training the new and seasoned fighters both in the restive Beni region as well as in Mozambique where ISCAP has been conducting training for its fighters.
