At least 40 people were killed and over 200 others wounded in an airstrike that hit a detention center for migrants near Libyan capital Tripoli. Satellite images taken of the detention center in Tajoura, a coastal town east of Tripoli, showed extensive damage to several buildings in the complex.
The Tripoli-based government blamed the attack on forces associated with Gen. Khalifa Haftar, whose Libyan National Army has been waging an offensive against rival militias in the capital of the war-torn country since April.
However, there is a back and forth of blame shift as the LNA has since denied the accusation blaming militias active in the Tripoli area for conducting the strike. Haftar, who receives support from Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, says he is determined to restore stability to the North African country.
The fresh wave of violence in Libya started in April 2019 after Haftar-led militias waged war on the Tripoli-based UN-recognized government. Haftar and his troops have been gaining international recognition seeing as his troops control a large swath of Libya and have seeming reduced the chances of ISIS regrouping in the north African nation.
