US Africa Command has announced that the US forces in Somalia conducted an airstrike against al Shabaab positions in the vicinity of Awdheegle town in Lower Shabelle region. The airstrike is said to have killed four al Shabaab members and the strike was after the militants attempted an attacked on allied forces in the region.
The US troops have vowed to intensify their fight against the al Shabaab alongside Somali and international partners to prevent al-Shabaab from taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia.
The airstrike is the second in less than a week seeing as the AFRICOM announced a strike on November 30th near Lebede that killed 9 militants. The increased airstrikes are in line with the commitment by the US to protect its assets abroad as well as its allies from enemy combatants.
