On Thursday 2nd of April 2015, at 5.00-AM E.A Time, 7 elements of the Somali militant Islamist group Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen made entry to the Garissa University College Compound and killed 147 innocent school children.
80 University of Garissa students were injured. One police officer was killed as he helped rescue trapped college children besides combat the terrorists.
4 Terrorists were killed by the RECCE squad, a commando unit trained to preempt and conduct operations against civilian threats
3 Al-Shabaab terrorists were arrested during the operation. The 3 were the first group of terrorists used to warn Muslim students out of the compound.
A group of approximately 7 militants attacked and besieged the Garissa University College campus.
The university, a branch of Moi University, is in the town of Garissa town, the headquaters of Garissa County, in Kenya’s North Eastern Province, 150 km from the border with Somalia.
‘It is unimaginable, that real Muslims adherents would engage in killing of innocent, unarmed school children, it is not supported in Jihad. Allah, does not support this”. An Imam in Garissa wondered of the attack.
Inter-Agency Teams Counter Terrorism Operation to Rescue Targeted Children
Robustly, the Government of the Republic of Kenya responded by deploying select teams from the Kenya Defense Forces, The Kenya Police, and The RECCE Unit- a commando unit.
Government focus throughout the operation was to rescue over 600 students. The joint counter-terror teams rescued over 500 students to safety.
“Rescuing school children is very sensitive and delicate, Directorate of Kenya Military Intelligence reports, these children were hysterical, in shock, and completely helpless. You must understand this psychology of operation before you embark on decommissioning the active-shooters” (KDF-DMI ).
The main focus was to rescue those school children to safety.

3 Terrorists were arrested and 4 killed when the RECCE squad was tasked with storming the cornered terrorists.
Our security officers involved in the Counter-Terrorism Operation were decisive, accurate, and professional to ensure objectives were achieved.
After the rescue teams verified we had rescued over 500 children trapped inside the hostels, all-Active shooters/terrorists were neutralized upon command to destroy them.
The operation ended 18.30 Hrs E.Africa Time.
