Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack at security checkpoint in a key military base in Bal’ad town near Mogadishu. At least three people were killed and several others were injured in the attack.
Intelligence indicates that the soldiers were reportedly new in the area having arrived a week ago. The ambush led to a heavy gunfight between the troops and armed militants that led to the deaths.
The attack was the latest in series of Al-Shabaab campaign against Somali military bases in southern regions as the country’s army with allied AMISOM and US forces step up operations to recapture areas still under the militants’ control.
