Two Cuban doctors have been abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Mandera. One of the police officer attached to guard them shot dead by the suspected militants who drove off with the medics towards the troubled Somalia borders.
Local authorities say they believe the abductors are still within the border with the medics and have launched a search using police and the military.
The Doctors identified as Landy Rodriguez (a surgeon) and Herera Correa (general practitioner) had settled in well at the Mandera Referral Hospital.
They were abducted on their way to work and the vehicle that was ferrying the doctors has been recovered. We have arrested the driver who is currently being interrogated
KDF and Police officers pursuing the unknown assailants believed to be Al-Shabaab militants.
Al Shabaab terrorists are notorious for targeting foreigners at border towns, having taken off with an Italian aid worker from Lamu some months ago.
