March 30, 2016: At least 200 new Somali recruits officially commenced their 3-month training in Jubbaland State on March 29th. They are the first batch of 600 police officers expected to undergo police training in the next one year.
The officer are expected to be deployed to different regions to enhance the security of the country as well as maintain stability in preparation for when he AMISOM troops complete their mission in Somalia.
Officials from Federal Government of Somalia, the regional Interim Jubbaland Administration (IJA), AMISOM and UNSOM attended the opening ceremony.
The training program is being conducted by AMISOM Police in partnership with the Somalia Police Force and IJA with tremendous support from The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
AMISOM has deployed a specialized taskforce to Kismayo to assist in rebuilding, restructuring and upgrading law enforcement infrastructure to internationally acceptable standards which is in line with its recovery and stabilization agenda for the police force in Somalia.
