Amid increased Al-Shabaab activity in southern regions of Somali, at least two Al-Shabaab militants surrendered to security forces in general vicinity of Luuq, Gedo region.
The militants identified as Mohamed Tawane and Deqoq Ibrahim were coordinators of attacks in Gedo prefectures. The two surrendered to the security forces who were on patrol and subsequently handed their weapons to the troops.
Somali military radio reported that they will be instrumental in providing credible intelligence on Al-Shabaab’s plans and activity in Gedo, the region they had been deployed to carry out attacks against security troops, government and civilian targets.
Al-Shabaab militants have been launching attacks targeting government and electoral delegates taking part in the ongoing national elections. More operations, especially suicide missions expected during this month of Ramadan, where the Al-Qaeda associated militants are expected to scale-up martyrdom operations.
