The Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF) has flagged off a total of 1,828 officers to Somalia where they will serve under AMISOM in its campaign against al Shabaab and Islamic State terrorists. The troops were flagged off to Somalia by Lt Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the Deputy Chief of Defense Forces, at Singo Peace Support Operation Centre in Nakaseke District.
The over 1,800 troops will be commanded by Col. Wilberforce. The troops were urged to maintain the standards held by their colleagues in Somalia that puts patriotism, discipline, and good fighting at the forefront.
The troops were deployed after completing a comprehensive training program that is aimed at equipping the soldiers with the necessary skills and combat capability to fight the ever-evolving threat posed by Jihadists in Somalia.
Uganda is the largest contributor to the mission, with more than 6,000 troops.
