At least 17 Deash militants were killed in drone strikes in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. According to a statement released, the airstrikes were conducted in Haska Mina, and Achin districts in the province in which hideouts and weapons belonged to the militants were destroyed.
The statement further said that among those killed were some foreign fighters. The airstrikes come shortly after government official raised concerns about increased Daesh presence and activities in parts of the country.
Last year in December, Zamir Kabulov, Russia’s special envoy to Afghanistan said that there are more than 10,000 Daesh fighters in Afghanistan which were termed by Afghan authorities as exaggerated.
The US military officials said last week it would send in at least 1,000 new combat advisers to Afghanistan as part of its efforts to boost US training commitment to Afghanistan. The deployment will include relocating drones and other hardware to ensure that ant Daesh elements or militants from other terror organizations are eradicated and are prevented from finding haven in Afghanistan.
