Over 150 rebels have been killed by the Saudi-Led coalition forces in the port city of Hodeidah in Yemen. The fighters were killed after several airstrikes, naval artillery backed by ground assaults pounded enemy-held positions in the coastal city on the Red Sea.
Fighting was focused around the airport, at the eastern entrance to the city, and near a university 4km south of the port. While there is conflicting information from the Houthi rebels, military sources have refuted any claims of high and exaggerated death toll on their soldiers.
Yemen has been at war since March 2015 when the Houthis occupied northern regions and forced the government into exile. Since then, a Saudi-led, U.S.-backed coalition supporting the largely exiled government has blockaded the rebel-held north and waged a devastating air campaign, causing thousands of deaths. The U.S. has sold billions of dollars’ worth of arms to Saudi Arabia and provides logistical and other support to the coalition.
