12 people arrested by Turkish police in an investigation targeting Daesh extremists hours after the US embassy there said it would remain closed for the day due to a security threat.
The 12 suspects were part of the 20 people for whom Ankara state prosecutors’ office issued detention warrants. Sources have it that these were foreign citizens and had been seeking to recruit new members to the group.
No connection has been made between the arrest and the US embassy security threat as the Turkish authorities regularly arrest Daesh suspects.
The US embassy advised its citizens in Turkey to avoid large crowds and the embassy building and to be mindful of their own security when visiting tourist sites.
The Ankara governorate said additional security measures had been put in place after intelligence from the US sources suggested there might be attacks targeting Americans.
