Sunday 1st December 2019, ten (10) Al-Shabaab militants were killed in joint military operation carried out in Gedo region of Somalia.
The operation came following uproar from farmers who protested of heavy taxation by the Al-Qaeda affiliated militant group.
Corresponding open source reports indicate that livestock farmers in Bardhere sought help from allied forces after militants demanded hefty extortions in the name of zakawat. The offensive which took place in the outskirts of Bardhere hit Shabaab bases in Baar-Maalim village leading to the killing of ten Shabaab militants.
AMISOM troops captured the agricultural town of Bardhere in 2015 from Shabaab but the militant group remains a persistent threat in general Gedo region citing the economic benefits the groups draws from the region.
In a separate operation, the U.S. military forces, AFRICOM confirmed on Saturday to have struck Shabaab targets in Jilib, the headquarters of the militant group located in the Middle Juba.
In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab terrorists in the vicinity of Jilib, Somalia, on Nov. 30, AFRICOM said in a statement. It did not indicate casualties on the militants but said there was no civilian harm
