Omar Abdel-Rahman commonly known in the United States as ‘the Blind Sheikh’ died on Friday night while serving his life sentence in a federal prison.
The 78-year old Islamist terrorist was the blind cleric who masterminded the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Abdel-Rahman was born to a merchant in a village in the Nile delta.
His death was announced by his son and daughter in his native Egypt and separately confirmed by spokesman Greg Norton at the Butner federal prison complex, North Carolina, United States.
The infamous Sheikh, who suffered from coronary heart disease and diabetes, died of natural causes, said Norton.
Although he was not convicted of the car-bomb attack on the World Trade Center that killed six and injured 1,000 in February 1993, Abdel-Rahman and nine other co-conspirators were found guilty of involvement in the vicious bombing.
On 22/2/2017, Somali based terrorist group, Harakat Al-Shabaab Mujahideen issued a statement mourning the death of Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind Sheikh.
Most terror groups salute his works but dispute his legacy.
