Two months after his appointment as the director general of intelligence of the National Intelligence Service Kenya, General Phillip Wachira Kameru has succeeded where the previous director failed.
Nipping the terror networks in East Africa, particularly in Kenya where his key role is to protect. An analysis on the level of terror threats on Kenya by Strategic Intelligence show a significant decline of the threats since the Director General took office.
Though there have been incidents, the terrorists have not been able to conduct any terror attack in the country as they had planned. Most of the terror attacks have been effectively preempted.
Indeed there is a sharp decline in terror activity in the country but this does not mean the threat is no-longer there. Al-Shabaab is very desperate and that is very worrying.
Intelligence experts in the region point out sheer luck and a weakened Al-Shabaab on this decline. However, Strategic Intelligence dissects the scenario and identifies his previous role as the Director of Military Intelligence at Kenya Defense Forces as a key factor in degrading threats posed by terrorists.
According to David Goldman, an Israeli intelligence expert working with Strategic Intelligence, it is not luck nor the degrading of Al-Shabaab rather the right approach due to the Generals understanding of the Al-Shabaab terrorists, their networks, and morphing processes.
“We expect this success on war on terror to succeed even more, Goldman adds. The only problem is sensational reporting by local media houses. It does more harm than good. Some of these reporters are sympathetic. Actually a horde of online bloggers and reporters seem sympathetic to the terrorist ideology”
General Wachira Kameru succeeded General Michael Gichangi who retired but the left an agency that was malfunctional.
Today, the National Intelligence Service seems to be functional and capable. While it may take some time to achieve desired results, the sense of security and a commitment to deliver is there already. The General is doing great so far, agrees Mohammed Amin, a Somali security expert.
