The US is working closely with Saudi Arabia and other allies from the region in a joint military operation against the Huthi rebels in Yemeni. The White House reported that they would be directly involved in the action but would provide both logistical support and intelligence.
National Security Council Spokeswoman, Bernadette Meehan confirmed that Obama had authorized provision of the same to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that is leading the operation in Yemen.
On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia launched air strikes against the rebels in an effort to help out the government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi as the country is hanging on a tight rope at the brink of a civil war.
US forces were not taking direct military action in Yemen, she emphasized, but were “establishing a Joint Planning Cell with Saudi Arabia to coordinate US military and intelligence support.”
The Huthi rebels have received numerous warnings and calls for dialogue as a way to redeem the country. They have been urged to cease the hostile takeover they are using and come to the table in political negotiations and come to a consensus among all involved parties.
There is hope for the militia struck Yemen and the president who has been forced to flee his palace in the capital and move to the southern city of Aden with the international community getting involved to help. However, the worsening situation has been blamed on Yemen’s Arab partners who have failed to take timely action leading to the gradual spreading of the Islamists groups ranging from Al-Qaeda, ISIS to Iranian-backed militants.
