The United States has announced that it delivered a second batch of military equipment to Chadian G5 Sahel security forces worth $15 million. The US has been enhancing its military cooperation with countries in the Sahel region as they fight insurgencies of groups primarily linked to ISIS and Al Qaeda.
The equipment, which will help Chad’s military and police forces fight terrorism and insecurity in the region, includes 80 vehicles, communications gear, and other related support material. Chad is part of a multi-national joint task force that is geared at fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Lake Chad Basin that has caused thousands of deaths in the participating nations.
Additionally, the equipment will facilitate Chad’s aptitude to deploy highly itinerant security forces to deal with evolving threats both within its borders and the volatile region at large.
The US delivered other equipment to Chad this year and on 11 July handing over 16 trucks, 900 medical kits and a newly constructed warehouse worth nearly $6 million. At the time, the US Embassy said it was the first part of a training and equipment programme worth 16 billion Central African Francs ($26.6 million).
